Started in 2017, the guide sought to provide a balanced look at the industry surrounding the ''Cannabis'' plant, particularly in the United States, with a strong focus on laboratory testing. As more U.S. states (and other countries) have legalized the plant's use, the cannabis industry continues to rapidly evolve in ways expected and unexpected. This third edition builds on previous material, adding more historical perspective on changing regulations, standards, and social impacts. It also adds timely topics such as how the insurance market is catering to cannabis companies, and it highlights new efforts to standardize not only laboratory testing but also accreditation of testing labs. One other major move: we've moved primary hosting to this wiki from [[limswiki:Main Page|LIMSwiki]], a wiki similar in vein to this one but with a strong focus on laboratory informatics technology. Enjoy!

I'm pleased to announce a new guide that has been released, the LIMS Buyer’s Guide for Cannabis Testing Laboratories. This guide recognizes the challenges of the current cannabis testing environment for laboratories and identifies the value of the laboratory information management system (LIMS) towards lessening the impact of those challenges on the cannabis testing lab. Not only does it address how the acquisition process should be approached and who the key players are, but it also addresses the current state of cannabis testing, and how well-implemented informatics can play a role towards a more efficient and compliant lab. Finally, an RFI for evaluating cannabis testing LIMS vendors is included to help you with the acquisition process. I hope you find this guide helpful!

This is just a brief update to announce two things. First, the guide Starting a Cannabis Testing Laboratory has received a slight update for 2021. Some of the statistics were a little outdated, and some of the citations were broken. This update also tweaked grammar a bit more and added a few new sentences to clarify points. However, given that U.S. Federal legalization is still not a reality, most of the content still remains highly relevant, if not largely the same. Second, a specification document—LIMSpec for Cannabis Testing—developed for cannabis testing software systems, e.g., LIMS, has been released. It's largely derived from the base LIMSpec document on LIMSwiki but tweaked to address the needs of a cannabis testing laboratory. Hope you find these documents useful!
